Georgia Bed and Breakfast at The Bones
House in Rome Georgia

Georgia bed and breakfast
Inn at The Bones House, Circa 1881 is located in
Rome GA. The balcony is the
perfect place to have breakfast only a few feet away
from the bed. This picture was taken in
1922. To date, this is the oldest picture we have found of the
house. The picture appeared in a book, A History of Rome
and Floyd County, published in 1922. The house was built of the
Classical Renaissance type architecture. In the fifteenth
century this style became popular from the Italian influence in
architecture. A pediment on the classical window framing at the
front of the house bears the date of 1881. J. W. Bones had the
house built for his family after moving to Georgia from Virginia. Mr. Bones was the
uncle to President Woodrow Wilson. It was in this house that
President Wilson visited with his future wife, Ellen Axson of Rome
Georgia. In
1884 the Bones family sold the property to the Axson family.
Mrs. Martha Battey,
wife of the renowned surgeon of Rome GA, Robert Battey moved to
the house in the early 1900's. The Battey's
granddaughter, Aimee, was married there. The
Battey family lived at the Bones House from 1896 to
1910.
During the period of
1909 to 1925, R. B. Hitchcock purchased most of the
land on what was then Crescent Street, now known as
East Tenth Street. This property was included
in those purchases. The grand estate was
sub-divided and sold off in parts by Mr. Hitchcock.
Since that time, the deed was noted as the R. B.
Hitchcock sub-division. It was around that time
that the street named was changed from Crescent
Street to East Tenth Street. Other homes came
to surround The Bones House in the 1920's.
Mr. Hitchcock sold the
house to the King family in 1926. This family
lived there until 1960 when the house came to
auction to settle the estate. Somewhere around
that time, the front of the house was changed.
The siding on the first floor was removed and brick
added to give the house a new look. In 1968
the house was sold to the McPherson family.
That family lived in the house until 2003. The
house went to auction again in 2003. At that
point, and throughout the history of the house, it had
been a private residence.
The
house is now the home of The Bones House Inn Bed &
Breakfast.
