Italian Renaissance Architecture

The Bones House was designed from the Italian Renaissance Architecture.  It was among the first, if not the first, house in Rome Georgia to be built of this type.  The house was built in 1881 by J. W. Bones.  Mr. Bones moved to Georgia from Virginia.  All the original architecture remains intact to this day. The house is now being restored and will become a Georgia bed and breakfast.  Visitors can take look into the past and enjoy the architecture as well as the rich history of the past owners of the house.  The house has played an important part of the history of Rome Georgia.

The Renaissance architecture was the first modern architecture. Rebirth is the meaning of the word renaissance (the Italian word is rinascita`).  It was to be the bridge between history and the modern world.  Italy was the birthplace of the renaissance architecture.  The development of this style of architecture ranged from the 15th century until the 19th century.  During its development, the renaissance architecture was seen most in Florence, Rome, and Venice Italy.  This style had four divisions of development.  The first was called Early Renaissance which was dated to the 15th century.  That period was followed by the High Renaissance and Mannerism Period in the 16th century.  The next stage of development was called the Baroque and Rococo Period which occurred in the 17th through the mid 18th centuries. Finally, the style evolved into the Neo-Classical Renaissance Period during the 18th to early 19th century.  Renaissance architecture continued to influence the development of the modern world well into the 20th century.

During the renaissance period buildings were being scaled down from the earlier Gothic period.  The architecture began to carry more function without the bulk of earlier styles.  Dominating designs gave way to more realistic styling.  The facades were made heavier at the bottom of the buildings and windows were dressed with pediments.  Decorative elements of design were the basis of the Renaissance architecture.  During the Renaissance period, architectural design was considered the ultimate art form.

As time passed and technology advanced, the limits of architectural design was no longer the same as in the past.  The designs grew simpler and much of the detail of yesterday's architecture faded as steel and glass became the fashion of the modern world.  With the introduction of steel, buildings no longer had the limits of the past.  Taller buildings were built which no longer required the placement of interior walls for support.  The rooms became larger and the structures taller.  The Renaissance period gave way to the modern period.  Memories remain of these past days and can be revisited  in the buildings and homes that remain unchanged by time.

The Bones House is a perfect example of the Renaissance architecture.  The first floor of the house was built heavier leading to the sharp angles of the peaks of the roof.  The roof has been restored using architectural shingles to give the roof an older look.  The windows are adorned with semi-circular pediments above the windows of the first floor.  The house towers two additional floors above the first floor.

The main focal point of the house is the window framing on the side of the front porch.  This window framing bears the date the of 1881.  All the woodwork of the window frames have been restored and the house presents itself as it did in the earlier years.  The windows on the second floor have the wrought iron bars that were true to the latter Renaissance period.  That was the time that iron works became the new material for building structures.  On both sides of the front entrance stand double columns.  As with the columns of the Renaissance style, these columns are in pairs that are placed close together.  The Bones House Inn welcomes you to come back in time to feel the spirit of the Renaissance Period.
